台湾と京都の意外なつながり**
When Shih-Hsiang (Steven) Tsai, a Taiwanese artist and curator, set out to explore Kyoto after first arriving at the Bridge Studio residence, he was surprised to discover Takao, a mountainous area in northwestern Kyoto that shares identical Chinese characters with his hometown, Kaohsiung, in Taiwan. This unexpected connection prompted Tsai to dive deeper into the fragmented historical connections between both places and directed his residency research into obscure historical and cultural narratives through photography, video, and installation work.
Tsai’s presence in Kyoto was not a random accident. Rather, it was a testament to the care and intentionality with which Mariko Sugita, urbanist and Bridge Studio manager, fostered this relationship. Sugita and Tsai first met in Taipei during a design workshop. Following that initial meeting, Tsai invited Sugita to participate in HYPERWAVE, a Taiwan-based art collective and residency project. “I was impressed with Mariko’s work during her residency with us. She did research into Japanese cypress wood and the way in which Taiwanese cities developed under Japanese occupation during the second World War.” For Sugita, inviting Tsai to come to Bridge Studio was a natural evolution of their friendship. “Steven originally invited me to attend the residency in Taiwan, and I knew that he was someone I wanted to continue building a relationship with. I’m really glad that I was able to return the favor and invite him to come stay in Kyoto.”
台湾のアーティストでキュレーターのShih-Hsiang Tsai（以下、スティーブン）さんは、Bridge Studioに到着後、京都を散策中に北西京都の山間部にある『高雄』という場所を見つけました。この地名は、彼自身の台湾の故郷である高雄と同じ漢字が使われており、思いがけず驚かれたそうです。
この偶然の発見をきっかけに、スティーブンさんは両地域の断片的な歴史的つながりに興味を持ち、写真や映像、インスタレーションといった方法で、知られざる歴史や文化の物語を深堀りするレジデンス研究を進めました。
スティーブンさんが京都に滞在されるのは決して偶然ではありませんでした。Bridge Studioのレジデンスオーナーで都市計画家の杉田真理子さんとスティーブンさんは、2023年に台北で開催されたデザインワークショップで出会い、その後、スティーブンさんがリーダーを務めるアート・コレクティブ『HYPERWAVE』のレジデンスプロジェクトに杉田さんを誘ったのです。
「台湾でのレジデンスでは、真理子さんのお仕事にとても感銘を受けました。彼女は日本統治下で発展した台湾の林業と、それに伴い発展した都市・羅東の発展についてもリサーチしていました。」
杉田さんにとって、スティーブンさんをBridge Studioに招くのは自然な流れでした。
「もともとスティーブンさんが台湾でのレジデンスに私を誘ってくれていたので、彼とはこれからも良い関係を築きたいと思っていました。今回、お返しとして彼を京都に招待できたことが本当に嬉しいです。」
人とコミュニティの架け橋となる空間**
