都市の環境を、身体で理解する**
Mayar Salama (b. Cairo, Egypt) is an urbanist, multidisciplinary artist, and designer. With a graduate degree in architecture and urban design, Salama teaches design and media at Coventry University in Egypt. She utilizes her background as an architect and her illustration skills to produce work that draws from a variety of sources and material approaches.
Salama’s approach to her work seeks to understand a city through its visual culture. This is accomplished by physically moving through urban environments and then documenting those experiences. In order to understand how she fits into a place as large and chaotic as Cairo, “I need to understand the genesis of it all, the city’s historical layers, and evolution, its chaos and visual stimulation, and then incorporate those things into my work.” Through mapping and illustration, Salama processes these disparate bits of information to produce new perspectives on existing spaces.
マヤール・サラマ（エジプト・カイロ生まれ）（以下、マヤールさん）は、都市計画家であり、多くの分野に関わるアーティスト、デザイナーです。建築および都市デザインの大学院修了を経て、マヤールさんはエジプトのカヴァンブリ大学でデザインとメディアを教えています。彼女は建築家としてのバックグラウンドとイラストレーションの技術を活かし、さまざまな情報、素材、アプローチから着想を得て作品を制作しています。
マヤールさんの作品は、実際に地域を歩き回りその体験を記録するという手法で、都市の文化を視覚的なアプローチに落とし込む形で制作されています。自身の拠点であるカイロのような広大で混沌とした場所に自分がどう溶け込むかを理解するために、マヤールさんは
「すべての起源、都市の歴史や進化、そしてカオス。それらを視覚的に理解できるよう、作品を制作しています。」
と語ります。こうしてマヤールさんは、地図の作成やイラストレーションを通じて、ばらばらの情報を整理し、既存の空間に対する新たな視点を生み出すよう試みています。
山口書店と芸術、その歴史と関わり**
Keiko Yamaguchi runs Yamaguchi Shoten, a still-active publishing house that has been in business for 80 years. Three years earlier, the building next door was renovated and turned into a café and rental space called ISBN. Yamaguchi talks about the historic nature of Yamaguchi Shoten and how it was originally started during World War Two as the owner spoke out against the war and began to recognize the importance of providing citizens with knowledge. After the war, the owner expressed a desire to preserve the company’s origins by publishing textbooks that addressed war, prejudice, and the environment. The founder was from Aomori and opened the space to Shiko Munakata, a well-known woodblock printmaker, as a place for him to stay when he came to Kyoto.
山口ケイコさんが運営する山口書店は、80年にわたって活動を続ける出版社です。3年前、隣接する建物が改装され、『ISBN8411』というカフェ兼レンタルスペースも生まれました。山口さんは、山口書店の歴史的背景について語り、当初、第二次世界大戦中に創業者は戦争反対を唱え、市民が知を持つことの大切さを感じました。戦後は学校教材を通して平和、人種差別、環境問題などに関する出版を始めた起源を残したいという思いがあると話します。創業者は青森出身で、著名な木版画家である棟方志功さんが京都を訪れる際の滞在場所として、この場所を提供していたそうです。
